The Government Rose Garden is the largest rose garden in India having more than 20,000 different varieties of roses cultivated over an area of 10 acres. The roses are beautifully organized in the five curving terraces covering almost 4 hectares and the garden is well maintained by Tamilnadu Horticulture Department.

The garden has been laid out with rose tunnels, pergolas and bowers with rose creepers. The slopes of the garden also features Nila Maadam, an observation platform. From the Nila Maadam, tourists can observe the entire rose garden. The garden also features a statue of an angel amidst the roses.

The rose garden has also received the Garden of Excellence Award for being the best rose garden in south Asia, from The World Federation of Rose Societies, during May 2006, in OsakaJapan. This garden is one of the 35 gardens world wide to have won this award
